Error: Element name AdditionalTax attribute 'referenceDocumentID' is missing

This validation error occurs when e-filing a Virginia Form 500 return with PDF attachments that aren't one of the 3 forms Virginia accepts.

Error message

Validation failed on [FILE_ID]: Form: Form500[1] RefundOrTaxDue[1]/AdditionalTax[1] Description: Additional Tax from Form 500C, Line 17 FormNumber: Form500 LineNumber: Line 20 Requirement: Type for a U.S. non-negative integer amount field Element Name: AdditionalTax XPath: /ReturnState[1]/ReturnDataState[1]/Form500[1]/RefundOrTaxDue[1]/AdditionalTax[1] XML Fragment: 4701 Field Key: 156,5,8,0,0,0,0,0,0 Error Code: [CODE] Error Reason: The attribute 'referenceDocumentId' on the element '{http://www.irs.gov/efile}AdditionalTax' is not defined in the DTD/Schema.

Solution

Virginia accepts only the following 3 forms as PDF attachments for e-filing:
  • Sch500ADJ
  • Form500
  • Sch500CR
To resolve this error:
  1. Go to
    Organizer
    States
    Virginia
    E-file
    Attachments
    .
  2. Review the current PDF attachments.
  3. Delete any PDF attachments that aren't one of the 3 accepted forms (Sch500ADJ, Form500, or Sch500CR).
  4. If you still need to attach a PDF to Virginia, use one of the 3 accepted form names for your attachment:
    1. Go to
      Organizer
      States
      Virginia
      E-file
      Attachments
      Summary
      .
    2. Select
      Attach PDF
      .
    3. Select your Virginia attachment and select
      Edit
      .
    4. In the
      Attachment Description
      section, select a pre-defined description such as "Form500 Federal Return Attachment."
    5. In the
      MANDATORY
      section, change the selection to
      User defined form/schedule name and element/line number
      for Form500.
  5. Perform a full recompute and recreate the Virginia e-file.
