Choose signature options for e-filed 1041 returns

Select and configure signature authorization methods for filing Form 1041 returns electronically using either the Practitioner PIN method or Form 8453-FE.
You can sign a return before e-filing it using 1 of 2 methods:
  1. Practitioner PIN method
: Taxpayers who use an ERO (electronic return originator) sign their returns using a 5-digit PIN. Both the taxpayer and practitioner must sign Form 8879-F, IRS e-file Signature Authorization.
  2. Form 8453-FE
: The system sends Form 8453-FE electronically with the return to the IRS instead of requiring a paper signature.
Follow these steps to configure signature options:
  1. Go to
    Organizer
    E-file
    Signature Authorization
    .
  2. On the
    Signature Authorization
    screen, select who entered the
    PIN
    and choose the
    Signature Option
    .
    • If you select
      Fiduciary or Officer
      and
      Form 8453-FE
      , Form 8879 won’t print.
    • If you select
      Preparer or ERO
, Form 8879-F prints for the fiduciary to sign. Keep the signed Form 8879-F for 3 years. Don't send it to the IRS.
  3. In the
    PIN Information
section, select how to create and enter the PIN:
    • Randomly generate fiduciary or officer PIN
: Use this option if you use the Practitioner PIN method.
    • Use first 5 numbers of firm EIN as ERO PIN
: After you recompute the return, the PINs will appear.
    • Print fiduciary PIN on the Form 1041, Page 1 signature line
: Select this option to display the PIN on the printed form.
  4. To enter PINs manually, use the
    Fiduciary PIN
    ,
    ERO PIN
    , and
    Date PINs entered
    fields.
    note
Enter the 5-digit PIN (the number can't be all zeros) for the fiduciary (if filing jointly).
