File types and filename requirements

  • To import data into a
    locator
, you'll need to use either a text file or a JSON file. For an example of either file, you can export a
    locator
    .
    note
To export a locator, go to
    Returns Processing
    ,
    Export
    , then select either
    Tax Return Export
to export a text file or
    Tax Return Export – JSON
    to export a JSON file.
  • The default file name for an exported file is the tax application letter followed by the 6-digit
    locator
    ID.
  • The filename for an import file is limited to 30 characters, including the 4-character filename extension. The filename can include spaces but can't include special characters prohibited by the Microsoft DOS 8.3 file naming conventions. If the filename exceeds 30 characters, the file won't upload to the servers and can't be imported.
  • The filename extension is determined by the tax application and tax year of the locator.
