Error: NY E-File: According to NY Business Rules beginning date

New York business rules require 1065 returns to use specific tax year software based on the liability period beginning date.

Error message

NY E-File: According to NY Business Rules, if the beginning date falls before 01/01/202Y, then this return must be filed using 202Y software. Examples: Liability period(LP) = 1/1/2025 - 6/30/2025 accepted as a 2025 1065 Tax Application. LP =7/1/2024 -6/30/2025 Accepted as a 2024 return (Must use 2024 1065 Tax)

Solution

  1. Go to
    Organizer
    General Information
    Basic Return Information
    Entity Information
    Dates
    .
  2. Change the beginning date to align with NY e-filing requirements:
    • Liability period beginning
      on or after 01/01/2025
      (e.g., 1/1/2025 - 6/30/2025): Use 2025 tax software
    • Liability period beginning
      before 01/01/2025
      (e.g., 7/1/2024 - 6/30/2025): Use 2024 tax software
  3. Make date changes on the federal return first. New York copies dates from the federal side.
  4. After New York accepts the return, you can revert the federal fiscal year if needed.
    note
If you can't change the dates, the diagnostic won't clear and you'll need to paper file the return.
  5. Do a full recompute, then recreate the e-file.
