About the e-file viewer

The system transmits returns and extensions to the IRS as XML files. You can review these XML files in the RS Browser using the e-file viewer. You can also download them for your review and record keeping.
The e-file viewer shows your XML file contents in Acrobat PDF. It organizes them according to the IRS and state-provided schemas. We no longer use style sheets to superimpose the federal XML file over tax form images. Instead, the e-file viewer now shows the XML file contents with identifying information pulled directly from the schemas.
  • The e-file viewer doesn't rely on IRS-provided style sheets to render the tax form image.
    • Previously, the IRS didn't always provide style sheets promptly, and they sometimes disagreed with the latest schemas.
    • Now, the system pulls line numbers, descriptions, and element names directly from the most current federal or state schemas. This avoids using outdated style sheets.
  • Historically, reviewing a state e-file meant looking at the raw XML file. This was because states didn't provide style sheets.
    • The new e-file viewer now uses a PDF format. This PDF format is available for all states.
  • The descriptions in the PDF file use working links to provide supporting schema details.
    • Blue hyperlinks let you go to supporting documents easily like other forms or schedules.
  • Each PDF file includes a taxpayer name, federal ID number (FEIN), page number, and XML file creation date.
  • PDF bookmarks give a way to jump to specific forms or supporting details quickly.
    • Where multiple forms or schedules are included, the number of forms and schedules are indicated parenthetically.
    • You can expand the bookmark to list each form and schedule.
  • Shortcut keys are available to help navigation. For example, select
    Alt + Left Arrow
to return to the previous view.
  • Unlike the style sheets, the PDF file is searchable using the
    Find feature
    .
    • For example, you can find an element name from a validation error by searching for it.
    • Knowing the context of the data can help resolve validation issues.
  • You can access the e-file viewer more quickly, especially when loading large XML files.
    • You no longer need to close the return to view either the XML or PDF file.
    • You can use the e-file viewer to save the PDF file on your local machine.
