E-file application summary and requirements

Learn about the steps and documentation needed for electronic tax filing, including how to access and submit your IRS e-file application summary for verification.
The IRS, state tax agencies, and private companies formed the Security Summit partnership. Together, they added new safeguards for taxpayers and tax preparers. These efforts make it easier to authenticate for tax return preparers and transmitters who use Electronic Filing Identification Numbers (EFINs).
Your provider will need to keep a copy of your e-file application summary.
note
If you're a new customer or you received a new EFIN from the IRS, submit your e-file application summary to Thomson Reuters to file returns electronically.

Obtain your e-file application summary

You'll need to provide a copy of your IRS e-file application summary before you can e-file tax returns. Sign in to your e-services account to get it. This summary shows the application you submitted and the IRS approved for your EFIN number. It lets Thomson Reuters verify that you're eligible to file returns electronically.
Once we verify your EFIN, you can file returns electronically. If your firm uses the IRS e-Services program, you can use Thomson Reuters to e-file.
  • If you need help with your IRS e-services portal or sign-in issues, call the IRS e-Help Desk at 866-255-0654.
  • Only the person who received the EFIN from the IRS can access the e-file summary. For sign-in help, call the IRS e-Help Desk at 866-255-0654.

Submit your e-file application summary

Send your e-file application summary to GSTEFINCertificate@TR.com. Include your 4-character account number in the subject field.
note
If you have more than 1 EFIN associated with your account, we'll need an IRS e-file application summary for each EFIN.
