Steps for e-filing a return

These steps apply to e-filing a return and extension in Organizer.
  1. Enable e-file in Organizer
    . Select the
    Federal e-file
    folder, then
    enable
    .
  2. Select a signature authorization method
    . Choose a signature authorization method, either the Form 8879 Practitioner PIN or the Form 8453 scanned signature document.
  3. Attach supporting documents in PDF format
    , such as Form 8453 and enter general dependencies for the return.
  4. Attach separate XML files for international forms
    :
    1. Form 5471
    2. Binary attachments for Forms 5471 and 8865
  5. Review additional information
    . Information specific to the e-file return, such as business name control and foreign entity identification.
  6. Check for e-file validation errors
    . Generate a validation file to check for errors and validate the XML file against the IRS schemas.
  7. Create the e-file
    . Create the e-file by selecting the Create E-file button.
  8. Review the status of XML file
    . Review the status of the XML file, including the date and time stamp, validation errors, and filename.
  9. Review e-file diagnostics
    .
  10. Perform a full recompute
    .
  11. Review the return
    .
  12. Transmit the e-file
    . Transmit the e-file to the IRS through the browser menu.
  13. Check the e-file status
    . Check the e-file status to verify that the return has been accepted or rejected by the IRS.

Additional steps

  1. Aggregating international forms: If the return includes international forms, aggregate them into the primary return XML file.
  2. Create a mixed return: If the return is a mixed return (i.e., includes a Life Insurance company or Property and Casualty Insurance company), create a mixed return XML file.
  3. Attaching a Form 1128: If a short period return is being filed, attach a Form 1128 to the return.
  4. Including a Form 8879: If the Practitioner PIN method is chosen, include a Form 8879 with the e-file.
It's also important to note that the IRS has specific requirements and guidelines for e-filing, including:
  • Business rules: The return must meet specific business rules, such as including required forms and schedules.
  • Schemas: The return must comply with the IRS schemas, which define the format and structure of the XML file.
  • Validation: The return must pass validation checks to ensure that it meets the IRS requirements.
