IP PIN eligibility and requirements for e-filing
Determine who qualifies for an Identity Protection PIN and learn how to use it when e-filing federal returns.
Anyone who has a Social Security number or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) and can verify their identity can enroll in the IP PIN program. The IRS generates a new IP PIN each year.
For more details about identity protection PINs, go to IRS FAQs about the Identity Protection Personal Identification Number (IP PIN).
important
- If the taxpayer lost their IP PIN or didn't receive a new one, they'll need to obtain it before e-filing.
- Remove the Identity Protection PIN when filing extensions. It's only used on federal Forms 1040, 1040A, 1040EZ, and 1040PR/SS.
