Trapped data

Trapped data is information you successfully import but can't see or use in the locator because the system couldn't attach it to a valid activity or group member.
Trapped data happens when you import a data value using a
Copy Number
or
Group number
that doesn't exist in the target group, and the required field for the group isn't in the import file.
It can occur in any Import/Export group data, such as Master Group activities, standard activities, and non-activity group data.
Many activities and group data types have one or more required fields. Those fields must be present for the activity or group member to be recognized and visible in the locator. If the required field is missing when you try to create a new member, other values you import for that member can't be placed correctly and become trapped.
note
Data Connection and Return XML won't be available starting with tax year 2024. All fields are now available in the Tax Return Import Export feature.

Prevent trapped data

Always include the required field(s) when creating a new activity or group member. Refer to the
Required_Fields
tab of the build report for data dictionary information for these fields. This will tell you which fields are required for each activity or group.
note
If a group member already exists, you can still import the required field, but you aren't required to.
If a
Copy Number
is required for an activity or group, make sure the
Copy Number
you reference actually exists in the target group.
If a
Group Number
is used, make sure that
Group Number
exists in the target group.
