How to use product classification

Learn how to classify products within ONESOURCE Determination. Classifying products lets you use AI to suggest classifications based on detailed product information and reference materials.

Access to product classification

To access the Product Classification feature, a Determination customer needs the
Product Classifier User
role. An administrator only needs to assign this role once at the tenant level for a single company, as it applies to all companies within that tenant. You can find the Product Classification feature at
Configuration
Mapping
Product Classification
in ONESOURCE Determination.
The
Classify products
tab will either be empty or show a list of products that have gone through AI classification, along with their results.
  • You can use filters on the screen to narrow down and display specific records based on your selected criteria.
  • Select
    How it works
to view more information about the classification process.
  • Select
    Download resources
to access the following reference materials, which serve as the foundation for the AI-generated classification results:
    • TR Product Guide
: This comprehensive guide covers U.S. products as maintained in the Determination tax content.
    • Product Taxability Matrix
: This document shows how U.S. commodities are taxed or exempt in various states and territories.

Product classification methods

You can classify products individually or in bulk.
To classify a single product:
  1. Complete the
    Enter product details
    form:
    1. Material/item group description:
Provide a product description (mandatory, max 1,000 characters). This helps to interpret its meaning and find tax content matches.
    2. Material/item group:
Enter the category or sub-category for the product (optional, max 200 characters). This provides additional context for more accurate AI classification.
    3. Product code:
Include a product code (optional, alphanumeric, max 50 characters). The system doesn't use this field to classify, but it helps link products to saved results. You can store that relationship in Determination or your own system.
      note
Character counts update dynamically. The system shows real time validation errors to help you enter accurately.
  2. Select
    Generate Suggestions
to begin the AI processing based on your entered data.
Product Classification will return up to 3 AI-generated suggestions, referencing the
TR Product Guide
available under
Download resources
.
To classify bulk products:
  1. Upload a CSV file (up to 100 products, 20MB maximum).
  2. Ensure the file uses the provided sample template and that column headers remain unchanged for successful processing.
  3. Select
    Submit batch
to begin AI classification of the uploaded file.
Product Classification processes the data in the background, letting you go to other screens. A notification will appear when processing finishes, as long as you remain signed in to Determination.
note
The classification process runs with or without historical mapping information. If you have already completed standard or custom mappings in Determination, the system uses those records to analyze data and suggest results. However, you must either provide the relevant data or approve its use before the AI evaluation process can consider historical records.
