System requirements and pre-installation checklist

System requirements

  • Microsoft .NET Framework 4 Full on workstations
    • Disk space
      • x86 - 1 GB
      • x64 - 2 GB
    • Windows XP SP3 or later
    • Pentium 1 GHz or higher with 512 MB RAM or more
  • 600 MB available disk space for the install
  • 1 GB minimum of available disk space on the shared network location (size of databases will affect what's needed)
  • Approximately 500 MB of space is required to download regular product updates each year. These downloads can be moved offsite after installed.
  • Nightly backup of entire shared location highly recommended.
  • Available USB port for hardware dongle.
  • Default printer driver requirements - PCL6 or later
  • Read, write, create, and delete permissions required to the shared data location including subdirectories during  and post-installation.
  • During installation:
    • Admin permissions to the local workstation (turn off UAC in Vista and Windows 7).
    • Drive letter mapped to the shared location.
  • Post installation:
    • Read and write permissions to <WINDIR>\windstar99.ini.
    • Read, write, and execute permissions to <PROGRAM FILES>\Windstar including subdirectories.
    • FTPS access over port 990 along with a dynamic secondary port for data channels range 50000-50100 for:
      • WSSendFTP.exe: ITN.ssl.ftp.thomsonreuters.com (upload only)
      • WsTnFtpDnld.exe: Taxnav.ssl.ftp.thomsonreuters.com (download only)
    • Access to the internet via 443 for:
      • International Tax Navigator.exe
      • WSSendStat.exe
      • WSRecordCount.exe

Web-based data collection and forms delivery - FNIS requirements

FNIS = Foreign National Information System
  • Access to the internet via port 443 for:
    • FNISAdministrator.exe
    • SecurityAdministrator.exe
    • International Tax Navigator.exe
  • Background SMTP connection to the mail server (optional FNIS feature)
    • Required for:
      • FNISAdministrator.exe
      • International Tax Navigator.exe
    • Send access only
    • User ID is for the connection only. The outbound emails will be from the appropriate FNIS administrator.
    • SMTP or SMTPS Server Name
    • SMTP or SMTPS Server Port number
    • Requires a secure connection (SSL), if required by your SMTP or SMTPS server
    • User ID, if required by your SMTP or SMTPS server
    • Password, if required by your SMTP or SMTPS server
