Common Issues Causing 990 Return Types to Be Rejected from e-File by the IRS

The following issues cause a 990 return type to be rejected from e-file:
  • Entries, such as
    NONE
    ,
    VARIOUS
    or
    N/A
, in text fields. For example, the IRS validation system assumes that NONE is an officer's name if
    NONE
is entered in the field for an officer's name. The validation system will then expect other information, such as the street address, city, state, zip, hours worked and salary. If the other information does not exist, an IRS reject code is generated for each missing item.
  • To resolve this issue, do not include text in a field if the field does not apply.
  • Entering negative income or negative expense amounts on either the summary or detail page. This may cause the return to be rejected even if the overall total of the detail amounts is a positive number.
  • Complete one of the following to resolve this issue:
    • Net income amounts with negative income amounts prior to entering in ONESOURCE Trust Tax. Net expense amounts with negative expense amounts prior to entering in ONESOURCE Trust Tax.
    • Enter negative income items as expenses and enter negative expense items as income.
  • Data required by the IRS is missing from the return. For example, the return is rejected because there is an incomplete address for a contributor, recipient or officer.
  • To resolve this issue, review and enter or correct data that required by the IRS.
  • Entries, such as
    NONE
    ,
    N/A
    or
    2.5
, in fields that require a whole number answer. For example, the
    Number of Employees
    ,
    Number of Hours
    or
    Number of Affiliates
fields require a whole number answer.
  • To resolve this issue, review and enter a whole number in the fields that require a whole number answer.
  • Database validation errors. These validation errors occur when the information entered does not match the data in the IRS e-file database. Typically, this information includes a mismatched of EIN, ETIN or organization type (such as 501(c)(3)or 4947(a)(1)).
