SCH Q category limitation
Function wizard is slow
Many of the Sch Q features require 3 mandatory fields, which slows down the response when loading the Function Wizard. Our team is currently working on improvements for a later release.
Support for 1 instance of each Sch Q category
When a feature includes mandatory fields, Workpapers uses text matching to determine which instance to GET and SET data for. However, this approach has a limitation that affects Sch Q feature SETs. The tax application allows users to create multiple instances of each Sch Q Category option, including
Passive Category Income
, General Category Income
, and Section 901(j) Income
. Each instance is assigned a unique Sch Q Category value: PAS, GEN, or 901J. If you have multiple instances of any of these categories, Sch Q features SETs won't function correctly. For example, if you have 2 Passive Category Income instances and 2 General Category Income instances, as shown in the following image, the Sch Q features SETs won't work as intended.
Workaround
To use the Function Wizard correctly, follow these steps:
- Select one value from the drop-down list for each of the following fields:
- Foreign Corp Name,Sch Q Category, andUnit Name(if required).
- You can still use wildcard character (*) for theCountryfield.
When you perform a GET operation, this may result in slower response times if you have a large number of values for these fields. Use a workaround to avoid creating separate GET formulas for each combination of Sch Q Foreign Corp, Sch Q Category, and Unit Name.
To retrieve all
Sch Q Categories
, Unit Names
, and Country
groups for a specific Foreign Corp Name, follow these steps:
- Select the desired Foreign Corp name from the drop-down list, but leave the remaining parameters (Sch Q Category and Unit Name) blank.
- SelectNextto proceed.

- Complete the next screen as you normally would and selectDone.
The resulting GET operation will return all
Sch Q Categories
, Unit Name
, and Country
groups associated with the selected Foreign Corp Name
in your binder.note
If you have multiple Foreign Corp names, you'll need to create a separate formula for each one to retrieve the data.
Multi-edit field type functionality limitation
Workpapers introduces support for multi-edit field type functionality, allowing you to enter explanations in a single Excel cell or field with a maximum character limit of 255. When you complete a SET operation, Workpapers for Income Tax separates the characters into the necessary fields or rows.
This feature works with Single Binder, Binder Group, and Consolidation DC import files, allowing you to enter up to 255 characters.
Workpapers enforces this character limit when users import data from Workpapers to Organizer (performing a SET function). However, when you export data from Organizer to Workpapers (performing a GET function), there is no character limit. Workpapers returns the entire data in a single cell from Organizer, even if it exceeds the 255-character limit.
The following image illustrates an example of a multi-edit field that appears to word-wrap, but is actually composed of individual rows.

Workpaper translation field - unable to SET
If you encounter an error when setting a translation field with a blank default value from a Workpaper to Organizer screens, try this solution: Click on the field/cell, add a space, and then attempt the SET again. By adding an extra space in the cell for the specific field, you should be able to resolve the issue. In the meantime, please use this workaround while we actively investigate and work to resolve the underlying problem.
