Improving performance speed

Some factors may cause Planner CS to operate at a slower performance speed than usual. To improve performance speed, complete the solutions for the following potential performance factors.
note
If you notice that performance slows during a certain time of day, a separate process may be running on the network at that time.

Delete unnecessary plan years or alternatives

Delete any unnecessary plan years or alternatives, especially if you notice that performance slows while working in plans with a large number of years or alternatives.
  • To delete years, choose
    Edit
    Plan Years
    Delete
    .
  • To delete alternatives, choose
    Edit
    Plan Alternatives
    Delete
    .

Turn off automatic calculations

When you enter new amounts in a plan, Planner CS calculates automatically. If a plan has a large number of plan years and alternatives, automatic calculations can slow performance. To help speed up data entry, you can turn off automatic calculations while entering data, and then turn on calculations to view the result. To turn off and on automatic calculations, choose
Tools
Automatic Calculations
.
note
When automatic calculations are turned off, Planner CS will only calculate amounts when you preview or print a report.

Check to see if the plan list is updating

When you choose
Tools
Update Plan List
, Planner CS may temporarily slow down while updating the list. If you notice sudden slow performance, you may want to check if someone at your firm is updating the list.

Check environmental factors

The configuration of your firm's network, workstations, and user settings can affect the performance of applications, including Planner CS. Of these environmental factors, your antivirus software and network configuration are 2 of the most common factors that can affect Planner CS.
Antivirus software
: Antivirus scans of the
WinCSI
directory can affect the performance of Planner CS. To correct this, exclude the
WinCSI
directory from the scan.
Network configuration
: If Planner CS is installed on a network, make sure that your network is configured for optimal performance.

Additional troubleshooting

Determine when performance slows

Determine when you notice slow performance, such as: when opening Planner CS, opening a plan, printing reports, going to input screens, or during a certain time of day or day of the week. Your firm's IT professional can use this information to determine whether performance is slow due to Planner CS, or due to an outside factor.
If none of the previous suggestions improve the performance of Planner CS, you can troubleshoot the following factors, which are independent of Planner CS.

Test on multiple workstations

If you test the process that is performing slowly in Planner CS on another workstation and that process operates at normal speed, there may be a network connection problem, interference from an application on the computer, or a user settings issue on the affected workstation.
If you can sign in to different workstations on the network with the same Windows login, you can test the account that is experiencing slow performance in Planner CS on several workstations. If performance is slow on each workstation, the cause could be user settings in Planner CS or Windows profile settings.
If you determine that the issue is workstation-specific or account-specific, consult your firm's IT professional for assistance resolving the workstation or user profile issue.

Test a local installation

If your firm has Planner CS installed on a server, install Planner CS on a local workstation and test with some local data. If performance improves with an entirely local installation, the network configuration may be causing performance to slow down. Once you resolve the network issue, you can uninstall the local version.
