Error received when opening a dashboard

Scenario

When you try to open a dashboard in Practice CS, you may receive a fatal error, and Practice CS will close.

Cause

Information stored about the dashboard in a specific system file called Clientsettings.xml can cause the crash. Or there is a problem with the content of the dashboard.

Solution 1: Rename the Clientsettings.xml file

Renaming the clientsettings.xml file will set all user preferences back to default. It will also clear all user-specific customization in the dashboards.
  1. Open Windows Explorer.
  2. Go to
    C:\Users\%user%\App Data\Local\Creative Solutions\Practice CS
    .
  3. Right-click on the
    Clientsettings.xml
    file and select
    Rename
    .
  4. Change the file name to
    Clientsettings.old
    .
  5. Close Practice CS if it is currently open.
  6. Reopen Practice CS.
  7. Open the dashboard from which you were receiving the error.
  8. If you no longer receive the error, continue processing as usual. If you continue to receive the error, proceed to the next step.

Solution 2: Delete the content of the dashboard

  1. While opening the dashboard from either the View menu, the dashboard icon on the button bar, or the
    Dashboard
selection from the Navigation pane, hold the Shift key while selecting the object you're using to open the dashboard.
  2. Holding the Shift key will have cleared the content of the dashboard thus deleting the bad data that was causing the error. You'll now have to rebuild the dashboard. The easiest way to do that is:
    1. Select the link:
      Select Layout
      in the dashboard screen.
    2. Select a layout in the
      Select Layout
window that opens. When asked if you want to save the current layout, select
      No
      .
    3. The layout you selected will appear on the screen. You can now change and add to it as necessary to restore the layout to the way you had it before it was erased.
  3. If you still receive the error, contact Practice CS Support.
