Error: No drives available on the database server

You may receive the following error when browsing to a backup file or directory when restoring a database.
No drives available on the database server. See the message below. It is possible that Practice CS cannot access the backup file or directory on the server. Verify that you have the necessary security privileges and that the backup file or directory exists.
In the
Restore
screen, the C: drive is always referring to the machine where the SQL instance resides (likely the server), not the workstation you're using. Therefore, if you attempt to restore from a local workstation, you are browsing to the server drive. If you don't have the correct permissions to do this, you'll receive an error.

Solution

There are several ways around this message.
  • Have your IT professional grant you network administrator access.
  • Have a network administrator restore the file.
  • Log in directly to the server.
  • Enter the UNC path to the backup file in the
    Backup file/directory
    field instead of browsing.
  • Restore manually using SQL Server Management Studio.
