Unlock an in-use return

Unlock a locked return when immediate access is needed or the original user is no longer actively processing it, taking care to avoid simultaneous editing conflicts.
A return becomes locked when a user opens a return for processing or closes out of it without saving and closing. If another User in the firm tries to access the locked return, they refer to a Return In-Use error message and can't open it.
Locked returns appear on the
Locked Returns
screen. All users can unlock an in-use return, but this feature should only be used if 1 of the following is true:
  • It's necessary for another user to access the return immediately.
  • It's clear that the original user isn't actively processing the return.
note
Only unlock a return when you are certain another user is not actively processing it. This creates a condition for 2 users to be editing a return at the same time. In this instance, the last user to save and close will replace the other user's changes.
If 1 of the users delivers the return to a taxpayer, the other active user can't deliver the return again. They'll get an error message. Changes made by the 1st user are the ones shown to the client.
