Error: Application Exception Details: Unable to cast COM object

If you encounter a COM object casting error in SMART Practice Aids, it's likely due to a Microsoft Office configuration issue. Verify the problem by previewing the workpaper, then resolve it by performing a Quick Repair or, if necessary, an Online Repair of your Office installation.

Scenario

You may get the following error message when generating SMART documents.
Error message
Application Exception Details: System.InvalidCastException: Unable to cast COM object of type "Word.ApplicationClass" to interface type "Word_Application."

Cause

This error is likely related to Microsoft Office configuration on your machine.

Solution

Verify the issue with Microsoft Office
Preview the workpaper:
  1. Go to the Generate section.
  2. Select
    Preview
    .
If the same error message appears and you're unable to preview the workpaper, it indicates a compatibility issue with your Microsoft Office installation.
Do a Quick Repair on Microsoft Office
  1. Access the Microsoft Office repair tool (typically found in the Control Panel or through the Office application).
  2. Select
    Quick Repair
     then follow the prompts to complete the repair process.
Optional: Do an Online Repair (if necessary)
If the
Quick Repair
 doesn't resolve the issue, do an Online Repair:
  1. Access the Microsoft Office repair tool (typically found in the Control Panel or through the Office application).
  2. Select
    Online Repair
     then follow the prompts to complete the repair process.
