F1040-174-03 e-file error
If Form 1040, 'CommPropStateRtnInd' is checked, then [the filing status of the return must be single or married filing separately or head of household] and Form 8958 must be present.
The IRS needs Form 8958 for married filing separate returns with a community property state (AZ, CA, LA, NM, NV, TX, WA, and WI) entered for the address of the 1040 screen.
Solution
- Complete the ComPSt screen in the General folder.noteYou can enter 0 in the fields on this screen if necessary.
- Re-create and retransmit the e-file.

- This IRS error code doesn't consider the scenario where a taxpayer lived in a community property state in the tax year, but moved in the processing year, and therefore needs an electronically filed Community Property State Allocation Record.
- For these returns, change the filing status to married filing joint, or file the return on paper with an Allocation Worksheet.
