Combined transmittal letter and filing instructions
This article describes the combined transmittal letter and filing instructions and includes steps to take if it won't print.
When you have a combined transmittal letter (TL) and filing instructions (FI) and you create a new TL shell, the process creates a new file in
UTYYdata\\$sysdata\\1040
called IYUSTS05.DAT
, which is the Transmittal Letter Shell file. YY is the last 2 digits of the year (for example, 2021 UltraTax CS YY=21); Y is last digit of the year (for example, 2021 UltraTax CS Y=1).To use these files, you'll need to create a new
Federal Filing Instructions Insert
under the Insert
tab in the Letters and email
setup. This creates an FI Insert file called IYUSTI05.DAT
that works with the Transmittal Letter shell. After you create the new FI insert, you’ll get the Federal Filing Instructions when you select your custom transmittal letter under General
, then the Letter
tab.Do the following if the insert doesn’t print:
- SelectSetup,1040 Individual,Federal, thenDocument Format to Combine Transmittal Letter and Filing Instructionsin letter format.
- SelectLetters & Emails,TL Shell, thenNew.
- Enter a name for your customized TL Shell, then selectOK.
- SelectDocument,Save, then answerYesto"Do you want to save the current changes?"
- SelectDocument, thenExit.
- SelectLetters & Emails,Insert,New.
- Enter a name for your customized insert, then selectOK.
- SelectDocument,Save, then answerYesto"Do you want to save the current changes?"
- SelectDocument, then selectExit.
- SelectOKto close the setup.
- Open the 1040 client and go to theGeneralscreen, theLettertab, then select the Custom transmittal letter number from the dropdown.
- View the combined Transmittal Letter / Filing Instructions by either:
- previewing the return.
- selecting it from the forms view dropdown.
