A dependent's name is longer than the character limit
The IRS sets certain limits for field lengths. Vendors can't go over these limits.
Go to the
General Folder
then the 1040
screen and enter a dependent's first or last name in the Dependent Information
subschedule. The number of characters can't exceed 12 characters for the First Name
and 13 characters for the Last Name
. If a name is longer than the maximum number, fill-in as much as possible. You can shorten suffixes such as junior to "jr" or "jr." to conserve space.
The IRS matches the IRS Master File database for e-filing. It's only necessary for the social security number and the first 4 characters of the dependent's family name to match.
