E-filing Form 1040NR
You can file Form 1040NR, U.S. Nonresident Alien Income Tax Return, or extensions electronically with UltraTax CS in the same way as 1040 returns or extensions.
- The IRS doesn't let you e-file Form 1040NR-EZ or Dual status returns. You'll need to file these returns on paper.
- Current and 2 prior years of the 1040NR can be e-filed. You'll need to file 2020 and prior Form 1040NRs on paper.
To mark all 1040NR clients, go to
Setup
, 1040 Individual
, Other Return Options
, Other
tab, then mark the File the return electronically if not marked for e-file in the prior year (Screen ELF)

Marking this checkbox doesn't also mark the
File this return electronically
checkbox for 1040NR-EZ clients. This is because the IRS doesn't let you file Form 1040NR-EZ returns electronically.
