Filing Status Optimization tool

The Filing Status Optimization tool helps you determine the most advantageous filing status for your married clients.
The tool is an automatic way to create separate returns from 1 set of joint data when married filing separately is best. A detailed report shows the federal tax calculation based on joint data.
Columns for taxpayer and spouse are based on their married filing separate status. Another column shows the sum of the federal tax calculation based on separate data. You can use this when filing separately isn't the best option, but the client wants you to calculate the return using both filing methods.
The Filing Status Optimization tool is helpful in the following cases:
  • The client was divorced in the tax year or is going through a divorce.
  • You want to produce a report for married clients to show that you have completed the calculation both ways. You would do this to be sure they are paying the lowest tax.
  • You are preparing returns in a community property state. Community property states are AZ, CA, ID, LA, NM, NV, TX, WA, and WI.  You have to split all items of community property equally between the taxpayer and spouse, or between 2 domestic partners in these states.
  • In some circumstances, the tax is lower for returns filed separately. For example, a taxpayer or spouse might have unusually high medical or Form 2106 expenses.
