Merge individual clients for a domestic partnership return
Use this procedure to merge the client data from 2 individual clients into a joint client. You can then file a domestic partnership return.
- Complete the individual federal returns. Don't add state information until after the merge.
- SelectFile, thenNew Client.
- Select a preparer and enter a unique client ID for the new joint client.
- In theEntity information groupbox, select1040, then selectDomestic Partnerfrom the dropdown.
- SelectAdd State(s). If you don't see the state you want to add, the state probably doesn't have domestic partner returns.
- SelectAdvanced Properties, thenDomestic Partnerstab.
- Select the taxpayer in the client list and selectSelect Taxpayer.
- Select the spouse in the client list and selectSelect Spouse.
- MarkSeparately list individual returns in DPR transmittal letterif you want the list of returns to appear in the transmittal letter.
- SelectOK.
- In theNew Clientwindow, selectOKto start the merge.note
- If critical errors happen, you should address them before you continue. Warning messages are usually for information and probably don't require more work.
- To print the list of critical errors or warnings, selectPrintin theMerge Client Data Resultswindow.
- The new joint client will open when the merge is complete. SelectFile, thenClient properties.
