Create a 1040-X amended or superseded return
Amending or superseding Forms 1040, 1040-SR, or 1040-NR requires Form 1040-X. Follow these steps to create Form 1040-X:
- Open the client's return and selectFile, thenSave As.
- Enter a new client ID to preserve the original information. SelectSave.
- Do a print preview of the new return file.
- Review the forms to verify it has the same information originally reported to the IRS. For now, make a note of whether it's the same.
- Go to theAmendscreen in theSeparate Filingsfolder.
- If the return matches what was originally reported to the IRS, mark theTransfer original informationcheckbox. All the amounts from the return will automatically transfer to the screen.
- If the Form 1040 doesn't match what was originally reported, enter the original amounts in the fields on the screen. Don't mark theTransfer original informationcheckbox.
- If you're also amending or superseding a state return:
- Select the state in theTransfer state(s)?window.
- Mark theTransfer original informationcheckbox on each state's Amend screen.
- To amend the state return only, leave this screen blank and mark theTransfer original informationcheckbox in the state’sAmendscreen.
- Enter information in theExplanation of changesfield. The Form 1040X won't fill out unless you've entered something in this field.
- Make your changes to the return on the other data entry screens. For example, to change the wages, go to theW2screen and enter the correct wage amount.
- Print or e-file the return. There are special data entry requirements for e-filing Form 1040X.
note
- You can't amend prior-year returns in the current-year application. Amended returns can only be completed using the same version of the application that was originally used.
- For domestic partner returns:
- To amend the federal return, follow the amend process in the single federal return.
- To amend the state return, complete the amend process in the combined state return.
