Use this statement to enter information regarding eligible children who qualify for Form 8839 Qualified Adoption Expenses. For Form 8839 purposes, an eligible child is any child under age 18 or any disabled person not able to care for themselves. If the child turned 18 during

- Before 2001 Disabled:EnterXif the adoptee was born before 2001 and is disabled.

- Foreign Child:EnterXif the adoptee is a foreign child.
- Prior Credit Received:Enter the amount of adoption credit received in the prior year for expenses paid for the adoptee. The application uses this number to calculate Form 8839, line 3.
- If Form 8839 was filed for this adoptee in2024Expenses:2024, enter the total of the amounts shown for the child. If there are prior expenses paid and the adoption isn't final, the application allows the expenses to be claimed in the current year.noteIf the adoption of a non-foreign child was not final in the prior year, credit is allowed for expenses paid last year. - CY Qual Expenses:Enter the total qualified expenses paid in the current year for the adoptee. Do not include amounts paid or reimbursed by employer.
- CY Empl Benefits:Enter the amount of employer-provided adoption benefits received in the current year for the adoptee. The application automatically calculates the employer-provided adoption benefits exclusion. For purposes of the adoption credit, if the adoption was final in or before the current year and adoption expenses were fully reimbursed by employer, the client cannot take an adoption credit for that adoptee.noteIf the adoptee is a foreign child and the adoption was not final in or before the current year, the exclusion of employer-provided benefits is not allowed in the current year.
- Final:Enter1if the adoption was final for the adoptee in the current year. Enter2if the adoption was finalin a prior tax year. If the adoption was not final in2025, any unused credit will automatically be carried forward to next year.
- State Use:Enter1(Maryland) if the adopted child was a resident of Maryland at the time of the adoption. The application uses this information to calculate the appropriate state subtraction from income. Enter3(Rhode Island) in this column if the child was under the care, custody, or supervision of the Rhode Island Department of Children, Youth and Families prior to the adoption. Enter4(California) in this column if the child was under the care, custody, or supervision of the California agency prior to adoption. Enter5(Alabama) in this column if the child qualifies for the AL Adoption credit.
