Overview
Use this screen to record Social Security and Tier 1 railroad retirement benefits information from Forms SSA-1099 and RRB-1099. The information entered in this screen transfers to the related 1040 forms and schedules. For example, the federal income tax withheld information transfers to the Form 1040, Page 2 line that reports federal income tax withheld from Forms W-2 and 1099.

Once the facsimile forms are completed, you can export the data to the application and transfer it into your client data files via the data sharing feature. You'll need to diligently review all data that's shared among clients.

Box 5 Net Benefits for 2023
The application calculates the taxable amount and generates the Taxable Social Security Worksheet based on data entered in this field.

- The application automatically calculates and prints the Worksheet for Social Security Recipients Who Contribute To An IRA.
- For Missouri returns, use this screen to enter income information for Social Security benefits and railroad retirement Tier 1 benefits. The application transfers the information to Missouri Form MO-A. Also, enter 100 percent of the Social Security benefits received based on the client's Form SSA-1099 and 100 percent of the Tier 1 railroad benefits based on the client's Form RRB-1099. The application adds the Social Security to the Tier 1 benefits to calculate the taxable portion.
Medicare premiums
Enter Medicare premiums not entered elsewhere in the application. The amount entered in this field is reported on Schedule A, line 1, Medical and dental expenses by default. If the individual is self-employed, Medicare premiums can be used to figure the self-employed health insurance deduction, in place of deducting the premiums on Schedule A. Use this section to enter the Social Security information directly from Form RRB-1099.
Net Social Security Equivalent Benefit Portion of Tier 1 Paid in 2023
Enter the net benefits received based on the client's Form RRB-1099 Box 5. The application adds this amount to the Social Security received, calculates the taxable amount, and generates the Taxable Social Security Worksheet based on data entered in this field.

- The application automatically calculates and prints the Worksheet for Social Security Recipients Who Contribute To An IRA.
- For Minnesota returns, the amount entered for railroad board benefits determines the federal taxable portion that's shown as a subtraction adjustment on Minnesota Schedule M-1M.
- For Missouri returns, use this screen to enter income information for Social Security benefits and railroad retirement Tier 1 benefits. The application transfers the information to Missouri Form MO-A. Lump sum social security benefits
.- PY Filing Status:Enter the filing status for the year for which the payment was received.
- Lived Apart:Mark this field if the filing status is married filing separate and the taxpayer lived apart from the spouse for the entire year.
- Year pymt Rec for:Enter the four-digit year for which the payment was received.
- Lump Sum Payment Received:Enter the amount of the payment for the earlier year.
- PY 1099 Box 5:Enter the total amount from Box 5 of all Forms SSA-1099 and RRB-1099 for the earlier year.
- PY AGI:Use this field to enter the AGI reported on the tax return for the earlier year.
- PY Adjustments:Enter the total of any exclusions and adjustments claimed in the earlier year for adoption benefits, qualified U.S. savings bond interest, student loan interest, tuition and fees, domestic production activities, foreign earned income or housing, and certain income of bona fide residents of American Samoa or Puerto Rico for years after 1993. For years before 1994, enter only adjustments and exclusions for qualified U.S. savings bond interest, foreign earned income or housing, or certain income of bona fide residents of American Samoa or Puerto Rico.
- PY Tax Exempt Int:Use this field to report any tax-exempt interest received in the earlier year.
- PY Txbl Benefits:Use this field to enter the total amount of taxable benefits reported on the tax return for the earlier year.
- Reported on RRB:Use this field to specify that state withholding is attributable to Tier 1 benefits. If this field is blank, any state withholding is considered withholding attributable to Social Security.

Taxable SS/Tier 1 RR Benefits (Force)
Enter the taxable taxpayer and spouse amount to show on Form 1040, Page 1, line 6b. An amount entered in this field overrides the calculated amount. You can enter
0
(zero) here. If the taxable amount is forced for either the taxpayer or spouse, the taxable amount needs to be forced on both taxpayer and spouse units of the SSA-1099

- For Iowa returns, Iowa requires that the full amounts from For SSA-1099, Box 5 are reported. If a taxable force amount is entered in this field, be sure to also enter the full amount from Box 5 in the Social Security Benefits statement.
- For states that use the AGI Worksheet for part-year resident and nonresident calculations, the amount that's entered in this force field will be allocated to the state that's entered inStateat the top of this screen.
