Overview

Use this screen to complete Form 3903, Moving Expenses. UltraTax CS transfers the amount of deductible moving expenses calculated on Form 3903 to Page 1 of Form 1040.

Use this section to enter information for Form 3903.
Unit
Enter the same unit number in this field that you have previously assigned, or will assign, to any code

Description
The description you enter is used as the unit description. This field is mandatory.

Use this field to identify the spouse to whom the moving expenses belong. If you leave this field blank, the default is the taxpayer.
State / City code
If you are processing a state return, enter a state postal code in this field for proper state processing. Press
F4
from this field to view a list of available state postal codes. Some state applications use the moving expense information to calculate state and local returns. For more information, access the input screen help for the appropriate state application by pressing F1 from within a state input screen.
Form 2555 allocation code
Use this field to classify the deduction as definitely related to foreign earned income reported on Form 2555. Enter the code that represents the appropriate allocation of the deduction or use the fieldview to make your selection. The following table lists the foreign earned income allocation codes.

This field is used to allocate the deduction between U.S. and foreign earned income. Deductions calculated as foreign earned during the assignment are used to calculate the Form 2555 exclusion. The Form 2555 Allocation Worksheet reports the allocation between U.S. and foreign earned income.
Additional information is required in the 2555 and 2555-2 screens to report this activity on Form 2555. Please refer to the applicable input screens for further information.
Armed forces move

in this field to indicate an armed forces move. This prompts UltraTax CS to disregard the distance test. If you mark this field, the words "Military Move" are printed in the field above line 1 on Form 3903.
Number of miles from old home to new workplace
Enter the number of miles from the old home to the new workplace.

Enter the number of miles from the old home to the old workplace.

The new principal workplace must be at least 50 miles farther from the old home than the old workplace was for moving expenses to be deductible. If these conditions are not met, Form 3903 is not produced and a diagnostic message is generated.
Move is outside United States or its possessions

in this field if the move is from the U.S. to a foreign country. Form 2555 allocates moving expenses over two years if the qualifying days under the bona fide residence or the physical presence test is not at least 120 days during the current tax year. If you mark this field, the moving expense is treated as connected with the current tax year and the following year, and allocates it accordingly. Please refer to the overview of the 2555-2 screen for further information.
Transportation and storage expenses
Enter transportation and storage costs incurred for household goods and personal effects.
Travel and lodging (not including meals)
Enter the costs for travel, excluding meals, from the old home to the new home.
Miles driven to new home
Enter the number of miles in the corresponding field when not using actual out-of-pocket expenses for gas and oil. The allowable amount calculates to be included on Form 3903, line 2 for travel and lodging expenses.
Total amount reimbursed for moving expenses (Force)
Use this field to enter the employer paid amount. An entry in this field overrides (forces) a code

(Excludable moving expense reimbursements) amount entered in the statement attached to the
Box 12
field in the W2 screen. You can enter
0
(zero) in this field if applicable. If you enter zero, the calculated amount is not reported on the form. Instead, the zero appears on Form 3903.
UltraTax CS bases any additional income due to excess reimbursement on the amount entered in this field. If additional income is required to be shown due to the difference between the force amount and the code

amount entered in the
Box 12
field in the W2 screen, you must enter this amount in the
Other Income
field in the Income screen.
