Representative information can be entered by accessing the Representative window for each preparer under
Setup

Office Configuration

Preparers
. The information entered in this window will transfer automatically to the POA screen when the preparer's name is selected.

Forms 2848 and 8821 - General Information

T, S, J
Use this field to designate for whom the Power of Attorney or Tax Information Authorization is being completed. If this field is left blank, the application defaults to the taxpayer.
  • Enter code
    J
     to print a copy for both the taxpayer and the spouse using the same information for a married filing joint return.
    note
    If different information is needed for the taxpayer and spouse, add a unit (CTRL+A) to the POA screen.
  • Enter code
    T
     to generate Power of Attorney information for the taxpayer only.
  • Enter code
    S
     to generate Power of Attorney information for spouse only.
    note
    If the taxpayer and spouse have different Power of Attorney information, then 2 units are needed and each unit should be coded
    T

     appropriately.
EIN
Use this field if the taxpayer or spouse has an employer identification number (EIN) to be included on Form 2848 or Form 8821 in addition to the Social Security number.
Power of Attorney/Tax Information Authorization
Use this field to select to print either Form 2848, Form 8821, or both forms. Note that if this field is blank, neither form prints.
IRS Service Center for power of attorney
The filing instructions are designed to have the client return the form to the tax preparer. To instruct the client to file the form with the IRS, select the appropriate IRS service center from the dropdown list.
You also need to edit the filing instructions and slipsheets by replacing the
[firm name]
 variable with
Internal Revenue Service
 and replacing the
[firm street]
,
[firm city]
, and
[firm zip]
 variables with the
[POA addr]

  • If the filing instructions are edited, the slipsheets also need to be edited.
  • Back up the filing instructions and slipsheets to protect any edits you make. For more information, see Customizing client documents: custom paragraphs.
Send copies of notices to representative(s) for Form 2848
For Form 2848, the 1st representative listed will be marked by default to receive copies of notices and communications from the IRS. Use the view attached to this field to select different options for Form 2848 representatives to receive copies of notices and communications. Leave the field blank for the default behavior. This field isn't applicable for Form 8821.
Send no notices to Form 8821 appointee
If this field is marked, the application automatically clears box 5a on Form 8821. This field is used to complete Form 8821, line 5b and isn't applicable to Form 2848.

Representative/Appointee Information

Use this statement to select or enter the information for each representative of appointee on Form 2848 or Form 8821. More than 4 representatives/appointees can be entered in the statement, but only the first 4 entered will be used on Form 2848 or Form 8821.

Forms 2848 and 8821 - Acts Authorized or Deleted

Signing a return
Use this field to select the reason for marking Form 2848, Line 5a, Signing a return. Based on the reason selected, a statement will print for Form 2848 with the text required in the Form 2848 instructions. The instructions specify 2 different statements for signing as a representative versus signing as an agent. Use codes 1, 2, or 3 to sign the return as a representative. Use codes 4, 5, and 6 to sign the return as an agent.
When signing the return as a representative, the following text prints: "This power of attorney is being filed pursuant to Treasury regulations section 1.6012-1(a)(5), which requires a power of attorney to be attached to a return if a return is signed by an agent by reason of (enter reason here)."
When signing the return as an agent, the following text prints: "This power of attorney is being filed pursuant to Treasury regulations section 1.6012-1(a)(5), which requires a power of attorney to be attached to a return if a return is signed by an agent by reason of (enter reason here). No other acts on behalf of the taxpayer are authorized."
Prior power of attorney still in effect
This information is used to complete Form 2848, line 6, or Form 8821, line 6. Note that the IRS requires an attachment of any Forms 2848 or 8821 not being revoked.

Executor or Personal Representative for Deceased Individual

If taxpayer or spouse is deceased, use these fields to enter the executor or personal representative information that will print on line 1 of Form 2848. (See Form 2848 instructions for details.) The executor or personal representative's name will print on line 7 of Form 2848 in lieu of the taxpayer's or spouse's name.
