Prepare Form N-200V extension
Use the
HIExt
screen in the Payments
folder to generate the Hawaii Form N-200V extension. Form N-200V payment, filing, and late penalty
- Hawaii doesn't accept federal Form 4868 as the extension request.
- The Hawaii Department of Taxation may waive certain penalties if a taxpayer files an extension, given that they meet other criteria.
- The Hawaii Department of Taxation doesn't support electronic filing of Form N-200V via 3rd-party applications such as UltraTax CS.
Taxpayers who don't pay all of their income tax by the original return due date are generally subject to a late penalty. However, the Hawaii Department of Taxation waives the Fail to File penalty on the unpaid balance of tax due as of April 22,
2026
if the taxpayer meets the following criteria:- Taxpayer files an extension request via Hawaii Form N-200V by April 22,2026.
- Taxpayer files Form N-11 or Form N-15 by October 22,2026.
- Taxpayer pays the remainder of tax by October 22,2026.
Prepare Form N-200V
Use the
HIExt
screen to complete Form N-200V. You can either have UltraTax CS calculate the payment amount, or manually force it.- To have UltraTax CS calculate the amount based on current data entered:
- EnterXin theCalculate Extensionfield on theHIExtscreen.
- SelectSetup,1040 Individual, theFederaltab, thenExtensionsto select the method for calculating the extension payment amount.noteSelecting multiple clients for electronic filing viaFile,Print Extensionscauses UltraTax CS to mark theCalculate Extensionfield if theCreate an extension without total tax liability amountscheckbox isn't marked.
- To force the amount: Enter an amount in theBalance due on extension (Force)field on theHIExtscreen.
- Let the taxpayer decide the extension payment amount: Clear theCalculate extensionandBalance due on extension (Force)fields on theHIExtscreen. When using this option, UltraTax CS leaves thePayment amountfield blank on Form N-200V.
Print the extension
When you finish entering data on the
HIExt
screen, select File
, then Print Extensions
to print Form N-200V.Prepare the return after filing an extension payment
Make sure to do the following when preparing an extended return.
- Amount actually paid with extension: The amount paid with an extension is reported on Form N-11 or Form N-15. Enter the amount on theHIExtscreen in theExtension payment actually made; reportable on main returnfield. UltraTax CS populates this field when you create the extension. Change the data entry for this amount if the taxpayer paid some other amount.tipIf you filed an extension via some means other than UltraTax CS, enter the actual amount paid with the extension in theForcefield. By doing so, UltraTax CS will automatically complete data entry in other fields, including fields for extended due date and amount actually paid with the extension.
- Date return filed: Enter theDate return filedon theHIPenscreen. If the date exceeds the extended due date, UltraTax CS calculates a late penalty on the unpaid balance due.
- Extension is not required to be attached to return: The Hawaii Department of Taxation doesn't need a copy of the extension when you file the return on paper.
