Prepare Form IT-540 extension
You can use the
LAExt
screen in the Payments
folder to generate the Louisiana Form IT-540 extension. The Louisiana Department of Revenue may waive certain penalties if a taxpayer files an extension request. Louisiana doesn't waive the Fail to Pay penalty unless the taxpayer has paid all tax by the original due date. Thus, the purpose of filing an extension request by the original due date is to waive the Louisiana Fail to File penalty on any tax still due as of the original due date.note
Details on the Louisiana extension:
- The Department of Revenue supports electronic filing and electronic funds withdrawal for the extension and the payment.
- The Louisiana accepts federal Form 4868 as the extension request, subject to certain provisions.
- You can also make payments online or via telephone.
