Prepare Form 4 extension
Use the
MIExt
screen in the Payments
folder to generate the Form 4 extension payment voucher. Form 4 payment, filing, and late penalty
- Don't mail Form 4 if you expect the Department of Treasury to issue a refund. The Department of Treasury considers any Form 4 received without a payment as invalid. Use Form 4 only to make a payment.
- The Michigan Department of Treasury doesn't support electronic filing of Form 4. You can make payments online by going to www.michigan.gov/iit and selectingPay Your Taxes Due Online.
- Use Michigan Form 4 to make any extra payments by the April due date.
- If the federal return is extended, then the Michigan return is automatically extended. Don't mail Form 4 if you expect the Treasury to issue a refund. Use Form 4 only to mail payments.
Taxpayers who don't pay all of their income tax by the original return due date are subject to late interest and penalty. Filing Form 4 doesn't waive any late filing interest and failure to pay penalties on any unpaid tax liability. Pay any unpaid tax liability by the original due date of the return in April to avoid paying late interest and failure to pay penalties.
