Use this screen to complete
Form M23, Claim for a Refund Due a Deceased Taxpayer
.
Personal representative information defaults to data entered in the 1310 federal screen. Use this screen if the information is different from the federal information.
For tax years 2016 and later, the M23 can be e-filed only if a PDF copy of the decedent’s death certificate is attached to the e-file as a binary attachment. This can be done within the application. Select

, then select the product type, return type, and the attachment title for the death certificate.
If you claim e-filing and a refund for the M1 and M1PR returns, you'll need to attach the death certificate twice, once for each return, to meet Minnesota’s e-file requirements.

General Information

Property tax refund claim
You'll need an entry in this field from one of the following to print Form 23 for the Form M1PR claim for refund. (1 = Surviving spouse, 2 = Decedent’s dependent, 3 = Refund is part of the estate)
Income tax refund claim
An entry in this field from one of the following is required to print Form 23 for the Form M1 claim for refund:
1 = Surviving spouse filing a separate final income tax return
2 = Surviving spouse filing to claim military service credits
3 = Decedent’s child
4 = Decedent’s grandchild
5 = Decedent’s parent
6 = Decedent’s sibling
7 = Child of decedent’s sibling
8 = Trustee or personal representative of a trust or estate
