1041 Federal mandatory e-filing falls under the greater than 10 return combined 1040 + 1041 mandate.
Client-specific exception
To complete Form 8948, Preparer Explanation for Not Filing Electronically, go to the
ELF
screen in the Electronic Filing
folder. Complete the Form 8948 - Paper Filing Exceptions section.- Taxpayer chose to file the federal return on paper: EnterXif the taxpayer chooses to file the return on paper.
- IRS error reject code (ERC): ERC number: The IRS issues an Error Reject Code (ERC) when it rejects a return. Error Code 825 is an example of a Master File Rejection by the IRS. To view the IRS rejections once you retrieve the acknowledgments, selectUtilities,Electronic Filing Status, double-click the client to expand the tree, then selectDetails
in the Comment column to display the error code numbers and text. - IRS error reject code (ERC): Number of attempts to electronically file this return: Enter the number of attempts made to file the return electronically. You'll need to make at least 1 attempt.
- UltraTax CS error reject code (ERC): ERC Number: Enter the ERC received in UltraTax CS that you can't resolve. For example, enter916for Code US0916.
- UltraTax CS error reject code (ERC): Number of attempts to electronically file this return: Enter the number of attempts made to file this return electronically. You'll need to make at least 1 attempt.
- Other circumstance preventing this return from being electronically filed: Enter any explanation of a circumstance that prevents you from filing this return electronically.

You may elect to suppress the printing of Form 8948 on a client-by-client basis.
Global exception
If the number of 1040 and 1041 returns the firm files from all preparers totals less than 11, select

and mark the Electronic filing mandate
checkbox. This indicates that the firm isn't covered by the electronic filing mandate, and you don't need to attach Form 8948 to paper returns. If a firm has 1 preparer and that preparer isn't a specified tax return preparer per IRS rules, mark this checkbox as well. There's currently no reporting requirement with the IRS that needs to accompany the tax return.To enter an exception for a specified tax return preparer not filing covered returns electronically, select
