F7004-904-01 e-file error

Database Validation Error: /Return/ReturnHeader/TaxPeriodEndDt: Form 7004, the tax year ending date ('TaxPeriodEndDt' specified in the Return Header) must match the data in the e-file database unless one of the checkboxes in Line 5b - "Initial Return", "Final Return" or "Consolidated return to be filed" is checked. (value YYYY-MM-DD, rule F7004-904-01)
This error means the tax year end date in the electronic file doesn't match what's in the IRS' e-file database.
An example of this error would be the return may be a calendar year end 12/31/
2025
; however, the IRS' database shows the client's year end as a fiscal year end, 06/30/
2026
.

Solution

Verify that the following information has been entered correctly in the General folder:
  • Initial / Final return
  • Tax year beginning, if short year
  • Tax year ending, if other than 12/31
  • Change of accounting period
(located on the PayExt screen in the Payments folder)
If the information in these fields is entered correctly yet the error persists, you will need to contact the IRS e-help desk at 866-255-0654 or file on paper.
note
For 1065 and 1120 returns, Form 7004 will not mark box 5b as initial return if the tax year is not less than 12 months. If the return is an initial short-year return, enter the
Tax year beginning
date on the 1065 or 1120 screen.
