Prepare 1120 Consolidated returns for e-filing
Prepare and e-file Form 1120 C Corporation consolidated returns, including required member setup, diagnostics, electronic file creation, and transmission.

- This article applies only to C Corporation consolidated returns (Form 1120).
- It doesn’t apply to: S Corporation consolidated returns (Form 1120-S), or Qualified Subchapter S Subsidiaries (Q-Subs).
- Consolidated S corporation returns are not filed as consolidated returns for e-file purposes and should be prepared using standard (non-consolidated) S corporation e-file procedures.
Follow these steps to enter all necessary data for a consolidated electronic return and create the electronic file. You'll need to complete these steps for each member in the consolidated group.

To file a 1120 Consolidated return electronically, you'll need a PRP for the consolidated return and each member of the consolidated group if your firm doesn't have an unlimited license.
- Enter the client's tax data.
- Select the Electronic Filing folder.
- EnterXin theFile this return electronicallyfield.
- Complete theSignature datefield.noteThis field is mandatory if you use the Practitioner Personal Identification Number (PIN) option to sign the return electronically. If you selectUse current datein theWhen Form 8879 (etc.) signature date(s) are not enteredfield inSetup,Office Configuration, thePrint Optionstab, you don't need to complete theSignature datefield. UltraTax CS prints the current date on Form 8879 and includes the form in the electronic file.
- If you use the Practitioner PIN option, enter the PIN information in the ELF screen.noteEven though you need to complete the PIN section for each member if you use the Practitioner PIN option, you need to print and have the taxpayer sign only 1 copy of Form 8879-CORP. Print this form or Form 8453-CORP from the consolidated client so the consolidated name displays on the form.
- SelectView, thenDiagnosticsto review the diagnostic messages in the Federal Diagnostics window. Select any item to open the corresponding screen to address the diagnostic message. Clear the Critical and ELF Critical diagnostic messages and review the FYI diagnostic messages, then close the Federal Diagnostics window.noteClear and review diagnostic messages for each member of the consolidated group.
- With the consolidated client's return closed, selectFile, thenPrint Returnsto open the Print Returns window.noteWhen you create the federal electronic file, UltraTax CS automatically creates the state electronic file. UltraTax CS generates a state FYI diagnostic message indicating the creation of a state electronic file. You can file a paper return for the state and suppress the creation of the state electronic file in the consolidated client.
- Mark theGovernment copyandCreate electronic filescheckboxes.noteTo create the return or check the return for electronic filing errors without printing forms, mark only theGovernment copyandCreate electronic filecheckboxes in the Print Returns window.
- SelectClients, then select all members of the consolidated group, including the consolidated client and the eliminations client.
- SelectPrintorE-Fileto print the return on paper. SelectTo Cabinetto send the return to FileCabinet CS. When you selectPreview, UltraTax CS checks for errors in the electronic file. When you selectPrint,E-File, orTo Cabinet, UltraTax CS creates the electronic file and checks for errors in the electronic file.noteYou can't preview a return in UltraTax CS when you select multiple clients.
- Transmit the electronic return via CS Connect.note
- CS Connect only lists the consolidated return for electronic filing, not the member returns.
- The number next to the entity in the Product column of the CS Connect window is the number of months if the return is a short year or fiscal year return.
- If you need to attach a PDF to the electronic file, attach the PDF to the consolidated return, not to the member returns.
