E-file Form 1120 for New York City
Electronic filing mandate
New York City mandates electronic filing for tax preparers who have prepared more than 100 original New York City General Corporation or Unincorporated Business Tax documents in the calendar year, including tax documents for prior periods, and used tax software to prepare 1 or more corporation tax documents.
New York City mandates electronic filing for corporations if the corporation doesn’t use a tax preparer and uses software approved by the New York City Department of Finance to file returns and extensions.
Tax preparers who meet the mandated criteria can't opt out of electronic filing. If a taxpayer wants to opt out, they’ll need to apply for a hardship waiver available on the New York City Department of Finance website.
Returns supported for electronic filing
You can file the following return types electronically:
- C Corporation
- Consolidated/combined
- Amended
- Short year
- Estimates (filed separately from return)
- Extension
Returns not supported for electronic filing
You can't file banking corporation returns electronically.
Signature requirements for electronic filing
Complete and sign Form NYC-579-GCT / NYC-579-COR before you file the return electronically. Enter the signature date on the NYCELF screen, or leave blank if it matches the federal date you enter on the federal ELF screen. Don’t mail Form NYC-579-GCT / NYC-579-COR. The preparer holds the original form for 3 years and must be available if New York City requests it.
Resubmit returns
If you need to make a change to an e-filed return accepted by New York City, amend the return and file it electronically.
If New York City rejects the return, you may make the changes, correct the rejection, and resubmit. If you can retransmit the return electronically, you need to file and have New York City accept it by the return due date, or 10 calendar days after you initially received the rejected acknowledgment, whichever is later.
If you can't retransmit the return electronically, you need to file a return on paper by the return due date, or 10 calendar days after the return was rejected, whichever is later. Include an explanation for filing late and a copy of the rejection with the paper return.
Attachments
If the federal return isn't supported for electronic filing by the IRS, you can still file the New York City return electronically. UltraTax CS will attach the federal return as a PDF.
New York City accepts PDF attachments in the electronic file and doesn't have specific naming conventions for the files you attach. If you're calculating Forms CT-324, DTF-625, or DTF-686-ATT, you need to attach them manually to the electronic filing. The following forms automatically generate as PDFs attached to the electronic file.

Payment methods
New York City accepts electronic funds withdrawal (direct debit), or check or money order for balance due returns and extensions. You can make partial payments.
You need to include bank information and a requested payment date when requesting EFW. New York City uses the bank information you enter on the federal Bank screen. If you have different bank information for New York City, use the NYBank screen in the General folder.
New York City can't withdraw funds if the account has a block to disallow ACH debits, or the ABA number isn't valid.
If the account has a block, or is through a credit union or thrift, unblock the account or ask the credit union to allow the transaction before submitting payment. Contact the bank and give them the New York City Department of Finance 10-digit vendor code:
