Install bar code scanners

The Bar Code Scan Utility has been discontinued starting with UltraTax CS 2023.

Install using a scanner with a USB connection

The tool installs automatically with UltraTax CS. To open it from within UltraTax CS, select
Utilities
, then
UltraTax CS Bar Code Scan
. To open the tool when UltraTax CS isn't open, select the shortcut icon on the desktop or in the Start menu.

Install using a scanner with a serial connection

Users other than Virtual Office CS or Terminal Server
: The tool installs automatically with UltraTax CS. To open it in UltraTax CS, select
Utilities
, then
UltraTax CS Bar Code Scan
. To open the tool when UltraTax CS isn't open, select the shortcut icon on the desktop or in the Start menu.
Virtual Office CS
: You'll need to install the tool on your local computer to interact properly with the bar code scanner with a serial connection. The steps required to install the tool vary depending on whether staff members use traditional or next generation NetStaff CS.
  • Traditional NetClient CS
    : For information about installing the tool, select

     in the title bar of the Virtual Office CS module, go to the Related topics section of the Virtual Office CS module help topic, then select
    Installing the UltraTax CS Bar Code Scan Utility

  • Next Generation NetClient CS
    : In the Virtual Office CS screen, select

Terminal Server
: You'll need to install the tool on your local computer to interact properly with the bar code scanner with a serial connection. Do the following to install the tool locally:
  • If you downloaded UltraTax CS from our website
    : Access the server UltraTax CS is installed on. Go to the
    X:\WINCSI\UTYY\DESKTOP\BarCodeScannerUtility
     folder (where X represents the drive on which UltraTax CS is installed and YY represents the year of the application), copy the
    UTYYBARCODESCANSETUP.EXE
     file to your local computer, then double-click the file to begin the installation.
  • If you installed UltraTax CS from a CD:
     Insert the CD into the CD drive on your computer. Select
    Start
     on the Windows taskbar, then
    Run
    , and enter
    X:\SYSTEM\UTYYBARCODESCANSETUP.EXE
     (where X represents the letter of your CD drive and YY represents the year of the application). Only the UltraTax CS Bar Code Scan Utility installs, not the full UltraTax CS application
