Switch to straight line to maximize deduction

The switch to straight line is automatic and there's no option to turn this off for assets using the ACRS or MACRS method.
To turn off the switch to straight line for assets not using ACRS/MACRS:
  1. Go to
    Setup
     in the
    Asset List
     window.
  2. Select
    Options
    .
  3. Mark the
    Continue declining-balance with no switch to straight-line
     checkbox.
When a switch to straight line has happened, a note displays in the Commentary on the Display Calculation window within the Asset Detail.

Publication 946, How to Depreciate Property, states when you use a declining balance method you'll need to switch to the straight line method beginning in the 1st year. This method will give an equal or greater deduction.
