Error: Unable to generate ELF file — The taxing agency has already accepted an electronic return

Unable to generate ELF file. The taxing agency has already accepted an electronic return.
This can happen when the e-file has already been accepted by the taxing agencies or if the client ID matches another client already e-filed by your firm.

Solution

  1. Select
    Utilities
    , then
    Electronic Filing Status
    .
  2. In the
    Electronic Filing Status
     window, review the status for the client for all jurisdictions.
  3. If the return was accepted for all jurisdictions, you'll need to file an amended return.
  4. If not all jurisdictions have been accepted:
    1. Go to the input for the accepted returns.
    2. In each return, go to the
      Electronic Filing
       folder and mark the
      Suppress the electronic file
       checkbox.
  5. If you have multiple data locations and a client in another data location with the same client ID, select
    File
    , then
    Save As
     to change the ID of one of the clients.
