View and troubleshoot XML files
If you want to see what's included in the e-file for a return, you need to view the XML file. The IRS requires that e-file information be formatted in XML.
- SelectUtilities, thenElectronic Filing Status.
- Find the client in the list.
- Go to theActionscolumn for the client and selectActions, thenView XML. If there isn't an option toView XML, an e-file hasn't been created for the client.
- To find a specific form, line, or amount, useCTRLandFkeys on your keyboard to search.
Troubleshooting if the XML file won't open
If the file won't open, review your file associations. You might not have an application assigned to open XML files.
- Open the Windows Control Panel.
- SelectPrograms, thenDefault Programs.
- SelectAssociate a file type or protocol with a program.
- From the list of Default apps, selectChoose default apps by file type.
- Select the app currently assigned to.xml XML Document.
- SelectMicrosoft EdgeorNotepad.
