Error: Orphaned input screens

UltraTax CS has encountered 1 or more input screens that are not associated with a defined activity, and has placed them within the "Orphaned" folder. Please change their form and/or unit, or delete them entirely, whichever you believe to be appropriate. Then, please close and reopen the client.
You'll get this error message when data is coming into the return and the unit that it was originally related to no longer exists.
tip
To avoid creating orphaned data in the future, make sure to dispose of all assets related to an activity that's disposed of by either selling, transferring, retiring, or putting out-of-service all assets.

Solution 1

Follow these steps to remove the orphan folders:
  1. Open the affected returns and select
    OK
    to close the error message.
  2. Select the orphaned folder. Each input screen unit that isn't related to a defined activity folder is represented by an input screen tab.
  3. For each orphaned input screen, either:
    • Delete the input screen by selecting
      Edit
      then
      Delete Screen Data
      .
    • If the orphaned input screen refers to an activity that should exist but has been removed, add a unit for the activity.
    • Assign the input screen to an existing activity by selecting the activity and unit number from the
      Form
      and
      Unit #
      fields.
  4. Close and reopen the client. You shouldn't get the error message again and the orphaned folder should be gone.

Solution 2

Follow these steps if the client has asset information and Solution 1 didn't work:
  1. Go to the
    Asset
tab from any of the existing units.
  2. Select
    Edit
    , then
    Reassign Assets
    .
  3. In the
    Activity
    dropdown from the
    Focus
    area, select
    Unknown
    .
  4. Select assets and reassign them to the
    Misc
    activity.
  5. Go to the Asset tab under the
    Non Calculating
    folder and delete the assets.
note
When entering assets and creating new activities like Rentals in Fixed Assets CS, the new unit won't be added in the UltraTax CS client. You'll receive a prompt regarding an orphaned folder. We recommended you create a unit within the activity folder within UltraTax CS first, then the Fixed Assets CS application will pick it up when you add additional units. Asset data entry can be completed within either application.

Solution 3

Follow these steps if the client doesn't have asset information entered and the previous solutions didn't work:
  1. Close the client.
  2. Go to
    X:\WinCSI\DeprData
, where X is the drive letter where the client data is stored
  3. Delete the client's folder. This won't delete any tax information; only data related to assets or depreciation
  4. In UltraTax CS, open the client. The error message shouldn't appear.

Solution 4

Due to the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, you might find an orphaned folder with the
QBI
tab. This can happen if there's an activity in Fixed Assets that doesn't appear in UltraTax CS, even if the activity has zero assets. When this happens, you won't find any assets when you go to
Edit
Reassign assets
. To resolve this, follow these steps:
  1. Review the
    Orphaned
    folder in UltraTax CS.
  2. Make a note of the form (such as Page 1, E).
  3. Open the client in Fixed Assets CS and go to
    Setup
    Activities
    .
  4. Review all activities that match the form you noted in step 2.
  5. If a form and unit number doesn't exist in UltraTax CS:
    1. Review the activity in Fixed Assets to verify there are no assets.
    2. Go to
      Setup
      Activities
and delete the activity that doesn't exist in UltraTax CS.
