Custom transmittal letter doesn't combine with filing instructions
If you created a custom transmittal letter and it isn't printing as a combined document with the filing instructions, verify that the following options are selected.
- Select the Custom transmittal letter number on Screen Letter located in the General folder.
- Select an entity from theSetupmenu (for example, 1040 Individual) and verify theCombine Transmittal Letter and Filing Instructions in letter formatoption is selected in the Document format group box.
If you've completed the tasks listed earlier, it is likely you need to create a custom federal instructions insert for your custom transmittal letter. To do so, complete the following steps.
- From theSetupmenu, select the entity (for example, 1040 Individual).
- Select theFederaltab.
- Select theLetters & Emailsbutton.
- Select theInserttab.
- Select theNewbutton, enter a document name, and selectOK.
- Edit the filing instruction text as necessary.
- SelectDocument, thenSave.
- SelectDocument, thenExit.
Now that you have created a custom federal instruction insert, you can add the insert to your custom transmittal letter.
To do so:
- From theSetupmenu, select the entity (for example, 1040 Individual).
- Select theFederaltab.
- Select theLetters & Emailsbutton.
- Select theTL Shelltab and open your custom transmittal letter.
- Within your custom transmittal letter, look for the embedded content variable named{Federal Instructions Insert}. The variable text will be pink.
- If you don't see the{Federal Instructions Insert}variable, place your cursor where you want to insert the variable and selectInsert,Embedded Content, thenFederal Instruction Insert. Now the filing instructions and custom transmittal letter will print as a combined document.

Rather than print previewing the entire return, you can select
Transmittal Letter/Filing Instructions
from the dropdown menu.
