Thomson Reuters Announces 2013 Extel Survey Results

Pan-European survey highlights achievement across the buy-side, sell-side and corporate communities

LONDON - Thomson Reuters, the world’s leading source of intelligent information for businesses and professionals, today announced the results of the milestone 40th annual Thomson Reuters Extel Survey at a lunchtime ceremony in London's Guildhall. Considered the leading benchmark for excellence in investment banking and asset management, the pan-European survey highlights achievement across the buy-side, sell-side and corporate communities.

The 2013 Thomson Reuters Extel Survey continues to capture deeper, more analytical data from all the key market practitioners than ever before. Voting was conducted primarily online and ran from 26 March to 3 May 2013. It reflects the contribution of over 2,200 buy-side firms, 2,500 analysts from 250 brokerage firms/research houses and nearly 1,000 of Europe’s largest quoted companies worldwide – over 15,000 individual voters in total, casting over 670,000 votes. All data, votes received and methodology applied were independently checked and verified by Deloitte.

Highlights of the key winners from the 2013 Survey are:

  • Leading Pan-European Brokerage Firm for Equity and Equity-Linked Research: Bank of America Securities – Merrill Lynch
  • Leading Pan-European Fund Management Firm: JP Morgan Asset Management
  • Leading Pan-European Individual Equity Analyst: Andrew Wood, Sanford C. Bernstein
  • Leading Pan-European Sector Team (Equity): Capital Goods Team, Bank of America Securities - Merrill Lynch
  • Leading Pan-European Hedge Fund: GLG Partners
  • Leading Pan-European Quoted Company for IR: Allianz SE

The 2013 Thomson Reuters Extel Survey identified a number of industry trends, which include:

  • Access to company management remains highly prized by investors, and vital in their decision process
  • Sustainability and ESG issues matter more for investors, but they want research to be integrated into mainstream analysis & themes
  • All sides of the investment community are highly interested in social media, but struggle to identify practical applications for investment decision support

“The Thomson Reuters Extel survey 2013 has seen yet another record in terms of participation. Whilst that gives us an unrivalled set of detailed data and insights for the market, it demonstrates too how, in these challenging times, direct client service, and a strong business proposition are truly valued and recognized” commented Steve Kelly, managing director of Extel at Thomson Reuters.

Today’s Thomson Reuters Extel award ceremony was hosted by the BBC’s Emily Maitlis in London's Guildhall and attended by 450 members of the pan-European financial community.
