Thomson Reuters Eikon Awarded Prestigious Edison Accolade for Innovation

Thomson Reuters joins ranks of key innovators in award ceremony to honor companies at the forefront of innovation, creativity and ingenuity in the global economy

NEW YORK, LONDON – Thomson Reuters has been honored by the internationally renowned Edison Awards for its service and technology innovation in its flagship financial markets desktop, Thomson Reuters Eikon. The award for Innovative Services was presented last night at a ceremony at the historic Navy Pier's Grand Ballroom in Chicago with finalists voted on by a distinguished panel of over 3,000 industry experts including senior business executives and leading scientists and academics.

Thomson Reuters was shortlisted for its focus on bringing the latest technology advancements to financial markets, making it easy for traders and analysts to consume and analyze huge amounts of data in an instant via its flagship desktop, Thomson Reuters Eikon. The award focused in on the recent addition of an interactive map which uses cutting-edge visualization technology to provide an intuitive real-time picture of the global commodities supply chain for metals and energy including oil, coal, gas and power.

“More than any year, this year's slate of finalists demonstrate the enormous value of teamwork, experimentation, consumer focus, market awareness and game-changing success,” said Frank Bonafilia, Edison Awards’ executive director. “It’s exciting to see companies like Thomson Reuters continuing Thomas Edison’s legacy of challenging conventional thinking.”

The interactive map was developed to help commodities professionals to consume and analyze data from a multitude of sources and track potential impacts of weather and geo-political events on market prices. The visualization technology used in Thomson Reuters Eikon’s interactive map is a breakthrough that greatly increases how much information users can consume, improving time efficiency and the effectiveness of decision-making. The map uses modern visualization tools to provide a real-time map of the world with overlays for weather, news, the positions of key production facilities and the routes of ships. A key enhancement to the map since its launch has been the addition of real-time alerting, providing a visual tool for financial markets professionals to view when there is an outage, slow down or issue at any oil refinery.

“International commodities markets saw $310 billion invested in 2010 alone and there are huge opportunities for traders if they can quickly and easily access and analyze information”, said David Craig, president of Financial & Risk, Thomson Reuters. “Thomson Reuters Eikon uses advanced technology to present financial data in an incredibly simple and intuitive way. Interactive map helps commodities professionals track the global commodities supply chain in action, allowing them to predict effects of impact factors such as storms on market prices and take profitable positions. We are thrilled to receive this award in recognition of the innovative services we are providing with Eikon and the benefits it is bringing to our customers.”

The Edison Awards recognize and honor innovation and excellence in the development, marketing and launch of new products and services. They are named in honor of Thomas Alva Edison to represent key attributes of persistence and excellence. The ballot of nominees is judged by senior business executives and academics from across the United States whose votes acknowledge the finalists’ success in meeting the award criteria of “Concept, Value, Delivery and Impact”.
