Thomson Reuters Announces Winners of 2015 StarMine Analyst Awards in Latin America

J.P. Morgan recognized as the top brokerage firm; Alexandre Spada, of Itaú BBA and Muriolo Freiberger of BofA Merrill Lynch Global Research, take the top individual awards

São Paulo, Brazil Thomson Reuters today announced the winners of the 2015 StarMine Analyst Awards for Latin America. This is the very first year that StarMine has presented its awards to the top stock analysts and brokerage firms in the region.

StarMine, a leading provider of objective ratings of sell-side securities analysts, measures the performance of analysts based on the industry excess returns of their buy/sell recommendations and the accuracy of their earnings estimates. The 2015 awards recognise the sell-side analysts who have shown outstanding performance either as stock pickers based on the calendar year of 2014, and/or earnings estimators on the fiscal period that reported between April 1, 2014 and March 31, 2015.

“For the past 14 years, Thomson Reuters StarMine has held this excellence recognition across the globe, covering European- and Asian-based regions, as well as the U.S. and Canada. It´s an honour for us to be able to expand this initiative to include Latin America as the 16th region where we recognize analyst skill set and timing on stock picking and earnings accuracy ability”, said Massimo Di Gregorio, Global Head F&R Market Development GGO, Thomson Reuters.

Raj Shah, head of StarMine sell-side research at Thomson Reuters added: “The sell-side research environment remained as interesting as ever. Market forces played a dominant influence on the direction and volatility of markets, making the analysts’ job as difficult as ever. Analysts had to be more relevant, as the needs of their clients became more complex and changing; as well as offering something more bespoke by getting closer to them, and understanding what they really needed and seamlessly delivering it. Winning analysts were those who were not afraid to make a sell recommendation, and issued estimates that were more timely and accurate than their peers. Congratulations to all of this year’s ranked analysts”.

Analysts are awarded prizes in three main categories:

  • stock recommendation performance relative to specific industry benchmarks (“Stock Pickers”);
  • accuracy in forecasting earnings as compared with peers (“Earnings Estimators”);
  • brokerage firms whose analysts win the most awards (“Most Award-Winning Brokers”).
