TORONTO, January 30, 2024 – Thomson Reuters (NYSE/TSX: TRI), a global content and technology company, is proud to announce that it’s received two distinguished awards at the 2024 Legalweek Leaders in Tech Law Awards. These awards demonstrate Thomson Reuters leadership in redefining the future of professionals through innovative applications of generative AI. Casetext, which is now part of Thomson Reuters, co-founders Jake Heller and Pablo Arredondo received the "Innovators of the Year'' award celebrating their exceptional work in leading their team to develop CoCounsel, the world’s first AI legal assistant. Casetext was also awarded "Best Use of Artificial Intelligence" for CoCounsel and its e-discovery and litigation capabilities.
"The awards for CoCounsel at the 2024 Legalweek Leaders in Tech Law Awards are a testament to the drive and spirit we saw in Casetext when we decided to bring them into the Thomson Reuters team," remarked David Wong, chief product officer, Thomson Reuters. "These honors highlight the power of our strategy in applying innovative AI solutions to help solve for the time-consuming problems legal professionals face—and that we are leading the industry in revolutionizing not just the way professionals work, but the work they do."
Launched less than a year ago, in March 2023, CoCounsel has set the standard for legal assistants built on the power of generative AI. To date it is used by six of the ten top firms in the United States, as well as by Fortune 50 corporate legal departments, solo practitioners and small practices, nonprofits, and legal aid organizations, spanning practice areas. Its widespread success and rapid adoption are a testament to the trust the Casetext team earned from customers during their decade in business.
Casetext’s reputation as bold innovators whose work has always centered on customers’ needs made them a natural fit with Thomson Reuters. The combined team of Casetext and Thomson Reuters is transforming how legal professionals’ work. By combining CoCounsel capabilities with Thomson Reuters products, lawyers are empowered to better serve more clients through the unique potential of generative AI.
Pablo Arredondo, Casetext co-founder and vice president of Product, CoCounsel, Thomson Reuters, commented on this recognition: “We appreciate ALM's recognition of the Casetext team's efforts to bring GPT-4 to law. As remarkable as 2023 was, we have just scratched the surface.”
The dual awards at the 2024 Legalweek Leaders in Tech Law Awards are a fitting coda to Casetext's pioneering work applying artificial intelligence to legal work prior to joining Thomson Reuters. Now, the power of the combined Thomson Reuters and Casetext teams are accelerating the redefinition of how legal work will be done, through more robust products including the industry’s most comprehensive set of generative AI skills, such as AI-Assisted Research on Westlaw Precision and Ask Practical Law AI on Practical Law, to help attorneys quickly gather deeper insights and deliver a better work product.
Echoing the company's vision, Casetext co-founder and head of product, CoCounsel, Thomson Reuters Jake Heller said, "The recognition at the Legalweek Leaders in Tech Law Awards is a powerful motivator for us to continue innovating. It confirms that our vision of making legal services more efficient and accessible, by making it easy for legal practitioners to take advantage of the power of AI, has been and will continue to be the right one for us to steer by."
