About Information Return Intake System (IRIS) filing

What is IRIS?

Information Return Intake System (IRIS) is the new IRS filing system.

How does this change for clients?

No changes are required to clients’ source files. Filing will happen with Thomson Reuters' TCC.

Which forms can I file with IRIS?

All Pub. 1220 forms for the tax year 2024, excluding Form 1042-S, are submitted via IRIS.

How do I file corrections?

  • TY2024 corrections for IRIS-submitted originals will use IRIS.
  • TY2023 and prior corrections will use Pub. 1220 format via FIRE.

What are the steps for IRIS submissions?

  • Generate IRIS Output:
    • Submit filings for supported payers and form types.
    • Output is XML, validated by an XSD file.
  • Review and Release Files:
    • Review packages, clear errors, and submit to the IRS.
  • Review Submission Status:
    • Monitor submission status and view error files.

When will actual submissions to IRIS be available?

The ability to submit filings to IRIS is expected to be available in January 2025 when the IRS opens for processing.

In which fields are negative amounts accepted?

Negative numbers are accepted in specific fields such as:
  • Form 1099-B: Proceeds, Contract Profit/Loss Amounts
  • Form 1099-OID: Treasury Obligation OID Amount
  • Form 1099-Q: Earnings Amount

What is the new IRIS Filings XSD Validation Errors report?

This report lists forms that fail XSD validation for IRIS, which you need to correct before IRS submission.

How is the submission process different from previous years?

The process is similar, but with a new IRIS screen for License clients to create and submit files.

What happens if a filing job exceeds the IRS’s 100 MB size limit?

The job is split into multiple packages, each with its own package ID.

How can users submit files to the IRS?

Once you clear the errors, you can choose
Submit to IRIS
to transmit files to the IRS.

How can users monitor submission status?

The IRIS Filing Submission Status page shows all jobs submitted to the IRS, including their latest status.

What are the possible status outcomes for submissions?

  • Processing
: the Package is being processed by the IRS
  • Accepted
: the Package has been accepted by the IRS and there are no identified errors
  • Rejected
: the IRS has rejected the transmission. A list of errors will appear as part of the Acknowledgement Response and can help to correct any errors prior to submitting a replacement for the package
  • Accepted With Errors
: the IRS has successfully processed and accepted the transmission with some errors. A list of errors will appear as part of the Acknowledgement Response. Packages with Name/TIN mismatches will have this status.
