To create a custom document request list (DRL) for Lacerte, you'll need to 1st install the Lacerte SDK driver on your machine for the tax year. You will also need to use Lacerte login credentials to grant TaxCaddy permission to access client proforma data in Lacerte.
If you are not using Lacerte, then for all other tax software.

Install Lacerte ODBC driver
First install the Lacerte ODBC driver to authenticate access to Lacerte.
Select

Lacerte ODBC Driver Installer
, select
Lacerte SDK Installer.msi
to download the installer. Install both the 32-bit and 64-bit installer.
You'll need to install Lacerte ODBC drivers with Admin rights, please contact your IT department to install these drivers.
note
Uninstall any previous versions of Lacerte SDK installed on your PC before installing the new version.
An Installer will be downloaded. Once the download completes, open the Lacerte Tax SDK installer and install it with Administrator rights.

Download window may vary based on the browser type.
When the
Open File
window appears, select
Run
.
You can make sure
Lacerte SDK
is installed successfully by looking at the list of installed programs in your computer's Control Panel. Install both 32 Bit and 64-Bit installers.
Once the installation process is complete, restart your machine.
Create custom DRL for Lacerte
To create a custom document request list (DRL), you'll need to 1st add or import clients.
note
To successfully create a custom DRL for Lacerte, you'll need to include the
Tax Client ID
as a required field. This field is called Client Number in Lacerte.
Select
Administrative
, then
Client Management
.
Select
MANAGE CLIENTS
.
You'll see a message that says you've used all the remaining pre-purchased TaxCaddy Gather and/or Deliver units.
Under the
DOCUMENT REQUEST LIST
category, select
Create Custom DRL
.
The
STATUS
column shows which clients are eligible for importing proforma data to create a custom DRL.
note
Before creating a DRL, roll forward the return to the current tax year in your tax software.
You can create a DRL for a client if they have a status
Eligible for Import
.
note
Client record fields pertaining to your tax software will need to be filled out accurately for Custom DRLs to be created.
note
If any required fields on a client record are missing, the status for that client will be
Missing Tax Details
. To edit the client's record, select the menu button and then select
Edit
. Once the required fields are filled out, the status will change to
Eligible for Import
.
To create multiple clients' DRLs in bulk, you'll 1st need to select the clients.
Option 1:
Select the checkbox next to each client to only select those clients.
Option 2:
To bulk select clients, select the 1st column header, then select from the following:
All Eligible
- Selects all eligible clients in your firm from all pages. However, if you are currently using filters and/or search then
All Eligible
(clients) will only apply to clients who are currently filtered/searched. If you need to perform the same action separately for a different set of clients then you'll need to wait for the 1st bulk operation to complete before initiating the same action for the 2nd set of clients. Requires Can Bulk Send permission.
All Eligible on Page
- Selects all eligible clients on the current page.
Only users with
Can Bulk Send
permission can use
All Eligible
to select all eligible clients in the firm. Users without permission will see an error notification when attempting to bulk send to all.
After you select one or more clients, a (blue) selection bar slides up from the bottom of the page. Select
CREATE CUSTOM DRL
to begin creating a DRL for each of the selected clients.
Select
DESELECT ALL
to cancel and clear all selected clients.
A PBFX file will download to your local machine if you have only 1 local tax software configured (such as, Lacerte, ProSystem fx Tax for tax years 2022 and earlier, or UltraTax). Select the PBFX file to open it.
TaxCaddy Tax File Uploader
window will appear.
If the status of a DRL gets stuck
In Queue
for more than 30 minutes, the
TaxCaddy Tax File Uploader
may have been shut down prematurely. Select the
Launch DRL
icon to resume.
The
Launch DRL
icon is available when there is only 1 local tax software configured (such as, Lacerte or UltraTax).
If you see the
In Error
status, make sure you have the latest version of Lacerte SDK (ODBC Driver) installed. Also, make sure you are using the latest version of the Lacerte driver. You'll need to 1st uninstall the previous version before installing a new version.
After the
TaxCaddy Tax File Uploader
window appears, Lacerte will need to authenticate access.
Access Confirmation
window will appear. Select
Grant
, to grant TaxCaddy permission to access Lacerte. In some instances, the window may appear in the background, minimize all windows, if necessary.
note
Install the latest
Lacerte ODBC
to open client data. This window wonβt appear if the driver is not installed on your machine or working environment.
On the
Sign in
window, enter your Lacerte log in credentials, then select
Sign In
.
note
You will need to enter your Lacerte log in credentials again when your log in session expires in 24 hours.
A notification shows you the current progress for DRL created. To update the notification with the current status, select
Refresh.
If the create DRL queue has been initiated, the notification will display the current progress for clients processed in the queue. An updated notification appears once all Create Custom DRL have been processed.
The client status will update to
Completed
if the client proforma data was imported successfully. Send the DRL to these clients.
The client status will update to
Error
if an attempt to import proforma data failed. Select the
Error Status
icon for information about why the import failed. Once you've addressed the issues, select these clients and create the DRL again.
