DPS Content Maintenance: Address Standardization and Subcountry Codes
Project Overview
Back in 2015, we had a situation where the DPS content screen was showing only US states on the Details screen because DPS content was adding non-US state information under the Address field instead of the state field. But now, the content ability has been enhanced, and all countries’ state information is visible on the Detail screen. Therefore, DPS content has undergone changes for non-US state information under this project called "Address Standardization of Sub-Country Code."
After determining the requirements of this project, DPS content conducted a series of meetings with the DPS Product Management team to understand clients’ usability and set the standardization for all addresses based on various situations according to ISO standards.

In this project, DPS content has standardized address classification and differentiated address details into various address fields of content based on adequate parameters.
Standard DPS lists
The address is one of the important parameters for the screening therefore, DPS content team has set address standardization in place for considering it in content.
The full address is split up into five different fields as stated below:
- Address: it contains information related to lane no., house no., street name, town, district, area, etc.
- City: it contains consider information related to city.
- Sub Country Code: it contains State information related to state of said country.
- Postal Code: it contains Postal code information.
- Country: Contains country information.

Case-1: City name exists in the sub country code table
In this case, the DPS content team checks whether that particular city is in the subcountry code table or not, and after that, we consider information in both fields, i.e., city and subcountry code.
Case-2: City and District both information given
The DPS content team considers district information in the address field and checks particular cities in the subcountry code table; if it exists in the table, then we consider the city name in the subcountry code field as well along with city field.
Case-3: if district, town, municipality, or village and city each information exists in subcountry code tab
Under this situation, the DPS team considers district, town, municipality, or village information in the subcountry code field only and city information in the city field.
Case-4: If the state and city names are the same
In this case, DPS content team checks whether that particular city exit is within that state or not. If yes, we take information in both fields i.e., city and subcountry code else, consider in SubCountry Code field only.
Example:
If source only provides city and country name where city matching with subcountry code but if that city exists outside of mentioned subcountry code then DPS content team first prioritize subcountry code.
Conditions:
- Let’s assume that source provides address like Dubai, UAE. Here we know that Dubai city exist within Dubai Emirates, therefore, we will give effect as Dubai as city, Dubai as subcountry code and country as UAE.
- However, in UAE if Dubai has city and Dubai as State and both have their own separate territory then we will consider Dubai only in subcountry code field not city. So, here in this case, we would add Dubai as subcountry code and UAE as Country.

Case-5: In case if district, town, municipality, or village information reflecting under subcountry code tab
DPS content research to verify that if it exists in subcountry code region then we add information in both fields i.e., address and subcountry code and if not, then only in subcountry code field.
Example:
DPS Dow Jones lists
Dow Jones lists are third-party lists in which data is coming from Dow Jones in terms of delta files and we feed those delta files in our system through FTP on daily basis.
Dow Jones does not provide “codes” for sub-countries. Instead, they provide names (i.e. Antwerp, Xinjiang, etc.), which are not even consistent within the same Dow Jones list.
For example:
The Dow Jones Sanctions Ownership List includes references to both “Arkhangelsk Region” and “Arkhangelskaya Oblast”, which is the exact same subcountry. To overcome this issue, content DBA team has created separate table to map the colloquial names provided by Dow Jones to actual ISO subcountry codes.

This mapping cannot happen automatically because Dow Jones follows no standard conventions.
